Online Dating - Arranging the First Date

So you have been messaging someone back and forth for a while now and you're ready to finally meet them in person, now what? Even if you feel like you have known this person for years now you should still take caution in protecting yourself in case it doesn't work out. So when should you ask for the first date? Your personal preference will determine exactly how long you wait, but on average by the third to sixth email it is custom to ask for a date.

How to ask for the first date
This can be pretty simple. Just let the other person know in a message that you are interested in meeting them in person. How descriptive you get on the details is up to you. You can include a specific date, time and/or restaurant or simply ask if they would be interested in meeting up for dinner or drinks. If you let the messages drag on and on you may lose their interest and the meet up will never happen.

If you still have not met up with the person you are interested within 3 or 4 months of establishing communication with them online, chances are they aren't as interested as you thought.

When and how to exchange contact information
Although it is custom for a man to pick up a woman for a date, meeting in a public place is recommended when meeting people offline. Never disclose your home address until you have met and feel comfortable with the person. Some people do prefer to talk on the phone first, but again it will be up to how comfortable you feel with the other person. Phone numbers can always be changed while home address cannot. To be safe, only exchange contact information on a need to know basis.

The first meeting place should be a very open and public place.

A café, restaurant, movie theater and bowling alley are all great places to have your first date. Even though the person seemed "normal" over emails and phone calls they may turn out to be someone you did not expect. Meeting in a public place will ensure your safety, just in case. If your date suggest a location that is not public like, a home or hotel, or a wide open park or hiking location, explain to them that you would prefer some place more open. If they take offense to this, maybe they weren't the best person to meet up with in the first place.

When you are out on your date, remember to have a good time. Be yourself just as you would on a date with someone you met in person originally. If you were dishonest with your personality or interests at all in your emails your date will know almost instantly. If you
